Noteworthy Nijmegen @ The Netherlands

“Wherever you go, you take yourself with you.”

Coming from Aalborg where I met up with Pig & Troels for a dinner last Friday.
Hope the weather in Nijmegen is better than Aalborg.
After an hour ride on the KLM's city hopper, we landed in Schiphol Airport. The last time I visited was about six months back.

The first thing to do is to fill up our stomach. There is a new cafe here in Schiphol airport that is selling "Old Amsterdam Omelets". Here we are now.

Formally introduce .... Nijmegen
Nijmegen is an old city, full of young blood. With a long spanning history of 2000 years, it left behind lots of heritage for us to learn today.
Located in the southwest of the Netherlands, It has an estimated population of 180,000.
Neighboring right next to Germany, it is a few kilometers away from Kranenburg (German's town). Due to low housing cost, there are many Dutch staying in Germany while working in Nijmegen and regions

History of Nijmegen
The city celebrated its 2000th birthday in 2005, it is the oldest city in the Netherlands.
Nijmegen was founded by the Romans during the 1st Century as an important base due to its strategic location.
During WW2, Nijmegen was the first Dutch city to be invaded by the German in 1940s, the inner city was heavily bombed that today you can see the big contrast of the buildings in Grote Markt.

Access to Nijmegen
From Schiphol Airport, it takes around 1.5hrs to reach Nijmegen by train.

Sanadome Hotel Nijmegen
Branded as the best hotel in Nijmegen because it is a spa hotel that all rooms are attached with a terrace.
Our second time staying here so we are rather familiar with the place.

Wrist tags for Spa.

The night view of the facade is pretty.

Here are some pictures about the room, which is facing the back this time. Big, comfort and clean.

Bird house is attached on the tree.

Orient Plaza
The weather is cold here and we yearned for hotpot. Glad that we found this here. There are 4 restaurants under the roof od Orient Plaza - Korea BBQ & Hotpot, Chinese, Japanese & Grilled we chosen BBQ & Hotpot, they called it fondue for the hotpot. The taste is already localized, there are many local customers here. For we Singaporean, we will not expect the taste like what we usually have. By the way, heard that the owners are Singaporeans too!

Flow Restaurant

One of the dining outlets in Sanadome, we ordered Indonesia Chicken Satay in peanuts sauce, Curry Chicken rice and deep-fried spring roll with duck meat which is similar to Peking Duck.

Our verdict is ... Do not expect it to taste like the ones we had in Singapore. The peanuts sauce is too much starchy though the taste is not bad. Curry chicken is too bland for Asian taste but still can make it. Overall, we understand and are ok with them.

Taxi Ride

Booked a taxi from the front desk, my Mercedes cab arrived with a hunk.
10 minutes cab ride to Grote Markt ended up SGD32.

Grote Markt
"Grand Market" in English, this place is the heart of the city. This ancient town square is surrounded by many historic buildings with ancient architectural designs which are converted to food and beverages outlets today. Many smaller streets make up the Grote Markt, just walk around and you will come across many interesting experiences. My second time walking through this street, the atmosphere here is great and crowds are much lesser. This street is well known for family-run businesses like cafes, restaurants, sundry and etc.
At the other side of the Grote Markt, there are some newer buildings which were built after WW2. The whole city was badly damaged during the WW2 and had gone through a massive restoration.

Freddy's Beerkitchen

Chosen this place for a break after walking around Grote Markt.
with an extensive menu and friendly staff, the interior is very cozy with nice music.
I chose a seat at the out-door so it will be easier for my man to spot me and also, I want to enjoy the last bits of winter wind here. As usual, I always ordered peppermint tea with Honey in the Netherlands.

Restaurant Peking
This is an interesting restaurant; the lady boss is from China who married a Singaporean. The lady waitress is a local Chinese whose parents came from Hong Kong. It's time to practice my limited Cantonese again.
When they know we are Singaporean and are yearning for good chilli, the lady Boss fished out her Singaporean hubby's private chilli collection - Hay Bee Sambal. I feel so homely here, the food here suits our taste bud - original & heavy! The restaurant sells Indonesian Food too. If we come to Nijmegen again, we will visit!

Such a traditional tableware.

Breakfast in Sanadome

As this is our second visit here, we already expected a fine spread on the buffet breakfast.
We are checking out and going to Belgium after this meal. So we opted for heavy breakfast to last us until afternoon and also need the food to burn for the cold.

Off we go to Antwerp Belgium, it will be about 2.5hrs journey including a transit in Breda station in the Netherlands.

See how I wrapped myself up, it is really very cold at the platform.

We have come to the end of this blog, during this trip, beside Nijmegen, we went to Antwerp, Brussel and Brugge.
