Johor Food Trip

"Keep The Calories Out of Vacations"

Going to Johore is always fun, now our sonny got his driving license, so I have 2 drivers here.
Going for a longer road trip in Malaysia is always in the plans for near future.
For this blog, I would like to share on all the food we had in Johor, all the way from Johor Bahru to Tangkak..

This blog will always be updated every time we cross the borders. The latest ones will always be shown on the top so that I no need to scroll all the way down again and again to update.
The main reasons why we always drive into JB for food is because we are looking for the "childhood taste", the taste from yesteryears. Most of my reviews below are based on my visits to roadside's mobile stalls / trucks to small stalls from various coffeeshops, small eateries and small restaurants that are run by family, some are even 100 years old. There are also some visits to nice cafes where we went for a chill when the weather is not in our favor.
We visited some traditional old school bakeries, groceries shop, snack shops and local products shops too. Anything that is edible will be share here.

If you are intending to visit other parts of Malaysia, please welcome to read up these as a reference:
9) Purely Penang

Ok, here we start the roll-callings we had in Johor and all reviews are based on the perception of me & my family's personal views.

Sidetrack Update August 2024:  It has been a long 6-month hiatus we took for these JB short trips as we were spending some time in SwitzerlandFranceDenmark & Arctic Norway where we successfully chased after Aurora Borealis., and we are back again.

🍜🍜🍜🍜🍜🍜🍜🍜🍜🍜🍜🍜🍜🍜🍜🍜🍜🍜🍜🍜🍜🍜🍜🍜🍜🍜🍜

TaSiXi HongKong Dim Sum
Address: 58, Jalan Eko Botani 3/2, 79100 Gelang Patah, Johor, Malaysia

There are several outlets scatters through JB, we chose the one easiest access - the one at Eco Botanica -which is nearest to Tuas Checkpoint.
Not to worry about parking as there are many parking lots in the area which is also parked by many cars from Singapore. I have heard about this place for quite a while and glad that we are here today with my parents and Pig.

Once we entered the restaurant we will be usher to our table with polite staff who serve us with dignity and confidence.
The first thing the staff asked us to order is "tea', which is a standard first order for customers who just took the seats.

Staffs carrying large trays containing various steamed or fried dim sums, or yong tau foo will coming around tables to tables.

We ordered quite alot and there are several items I like to highlight:

Char Siew Bun
I also feel this is nice too, not too fat nor salty.

Dan Gui Siew Mai
Something different as the normal siew mai from other restaurants.
There is dan gui taste lingering in my mouth, the meat are not fat and it taste great.

Loh Mai Gai
I always like LMG and this suit my taste. I like it!

Xiao Long Bao
The soup inside tasted flavorful and the meat is well marinated.

Stir Fried Carrot Cake
Love the aromatic chye poh taste in the background!
This is crispy outside & soft in the inside.

Chee Cheong Fun
We ordered the "kosong" one, and taste soft and silky.

Braised Chicken Feet (red colour)
They have 2 kind of braised chicken feet - black & red.
We ordered the red one as Hubby prefer this, and in the end we ordered the second plate as it is really soft and easily nibbled to bones.

Talula Hill Farm Resort
Address: PTD 40612, Jln Padang Tembak, 86000 Kluang, Johor, Malaysia

We drove over here from Malacca since we were on the way to JB.
Even though we had exited Ayer Hitam from the NS highway, it still took us another 45 minutes to reach this place.

Near to the reception, there is a playground and BBQ station.

This menu stand can be found at the entrance of the reception which briefed us about the F & B service here.

The first view we receive at the corner of the building., the cafe is located at one floor down from below the reception.

Upon entry to the small road that led us to this place, expect some bumpy off-road track and stray but friendly dogs.

Talula resort in located on the hilltop that is surrounded by nearby forest and plantation.

There were no much people when we came except for a couple of people taking some photos and enjoying the scenery.

The resort for inhouse guest is located at the lower part of the hill while the reception and cafe are located at the top where the car can reach.
From the photo below, you can see the resort in the view from the hilltop.

We ordered some drinks and chilled over the terrace of the cafe which is known is "Kefi".
The scenery of neat, green small crops plantations in the nearby forest, is a healing to our eyes.
Not far from the field, there is chicken coop and a small shack in the view too.

Though we were busying chatting away, but we were soon being empowered for the sound of chirpings from many kinds of birds that we went in silence automatically.

The distinctive chirpings was made up of different tone and different pitches that sang at the same time. It was so beautiful, calming and healing to our souls.

The drinks we had taste average and the scenery worth the hassle to drive over even though we stayed for merely an hour.

Address: 29, Jalan Mutiara Emas 2A, Taman Mount Austin, 81100 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia

Located along the stretch of TaSiXi and few shops away from BroLokLok, it is a place that can be found easily.
There is ample parking here with heavy crowds as this area is dotted with many dining choices.

Proudly presented themselves that they have been feeding hungry stomachs for 3 generations, I really look forward for their secret sambal recipe.

Order is to be taken outside as that is where prices will be quoted as seafood cost are seasonal and you can get to choose.  The staff at the position is very friendly and helpful to answer all your queries.

In the end we ordered 7 monstrous dishes :
1) Fried Lettuce with Garlic
Lettuce are very crunchy at the perfect texture.
Garlic sauce is simple but aromatic.

2) Seafood Fried Rice
Base on per head basis so we ordered 5 plates.
The grain are separated with each grain was infused with umami. Though there is a lack of wok hei.
So far, we are satisfied with this fried rice that come with fresh seafood.

3) Garlic Lala
Anything goes with garlic will never go wrong when these lala opened up their shells beautifully.
Lala are very fresh and it blend perfectly with the garlic sauce.

4) Kam Heong Big Prawns
Kam Heong is a local Malaysian iconic flavour that is a perfect mix of savoury spices and fresh aromatics that impart a delicious fragrance you'll be able to sniff from a mile away.
I like the way they serve this dish, the staff made a thin slice over it, deveined it and the taste will easily being absorbed. We manage to deshelled the prawn easily merely with fork and spoon which means, the prawns are very fresh.

It incorporates ingredients from various cultures and races, consisting of kitchen staples like dried shrimp, lemongrass, curry leaves, shallots, oyster sauce, and more.
This flavor is also very popular in Singapore too.

5) Squid with Salted Egg Sauce
This sauce is another common yet heavenly taste you can find in this region including Singapore.
This dish is also one of the soul of the restaurant that taste so rich with creamy texture and unique savory sweet flavour.
It can blend well with some seafood dishes, meat dishes and more. The salty umami taste stood out on the taste buds and is welcomed in many places in the Asia.
The basic of this dish we ordered : Squid must be fresh otherwise it will be ruined.
And the squid here is real fresh as well.

6) BBQ Stingray with Secret Sambel Recipe.
First of all, the stingray is fresh, well smoked in the BBQ, topped with a big spread of the sambal sauce. The sambal sauce comes with wok hei! We love this dish very much.

7) Blanched SiHums
AKA cockles in English, we opted blanched SiHums as this is the most common way to eat this dish where you open the shell, pull out the flesh, dip in the chilli and put in your mouth.
This restaurant has the guts to have "Blanched" on their menu means they are confident on the quality of these cockles. Hei Huang indeed live up to the name to provide fresh seafood.

My mum ate real alot on this dish and everyone was clapping their hand on the freshness of the food, that comes with the smell of the sea.

8) Salted Egg Crayfish

9) Gan Xiang LaLa

Mee Siam & Toast (森界)
Address: 9, Jalan Indah 8/13, Taman Bukit Indah, 81200 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia

This Chinese name of this place is 森界, we reached this place 3 minutes before the opening hours and there is already a group of locals before us.

Within 20 minutes, after the shop opened, the tables were mostly filled up.

The specialty of this place is mee siam which available in the normal style and enhanced with tom yum style. Nasi lemak in a couple of choices is also available.

We ordered quite alot for the 5 of us..
  • 4 Mee Siam Tom Yum Signature.
  • 1 Nasi Lemak Signature
  • Butter and Kaya Toast
  • Half Boiled Eggs
  • Egg Mayo Toast
  • 3 Kopi O
  • 2 Kopi

Mee Siam is really good, further tom yum taste was well infused.

Nasi Lemak is normal though slightly wet.

Coffee came with a "roasted" aftertaste, but they are slightly watery. Next time, have to highlight prefer thicker version.

The FOUNDERS Cafe
Address: Tiong Nam Tebrau, 45, Jln Tiong Emas, Kawasan Perindustrian Tebrau, 81100 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia.

When we were still feeling full from our hearty breakfast except my Mr. who is ready for a complete lunch.
Well, we should never let the driver go hungry.... 😜😜
Decided to visit this cafe at the last minute since we were in Austin area.
Despite it is located within the industrial site of Tebrau, this hidden cafe is very popular with customers.

We like the place upon entry as it was big, bright, spacious and clean.
It is well decorated with industrial theme and enhanced trinket with friendly staff.

Once we were seated, we were greeted with a bottle of water that looks like a giant bottle of cough syrup.

We ordered some beverages, 2 bagels and 1 breakfast.
The food is nice, coffee is good, drink was refreshing.  It is very coy to chill around in a sunny afternoon.

There is a handful of parking lots in the premises, but you can always double park here.
Alternatively, you can also park outside the premises, I can see there are many cars surrounding this cafe.

This family- style restaurant is located in the far end of Kulai, in the residential area, just 30 minutes more, we will reach Muar!
The famous dishes here are those roasted in kiln, after covid customers are not allow to go into their kitchen to see the kiln.

The place is well decorated like those minsu in Taiwan, it is full of cottage feel.
The roof is decorated with grape vine and mini ponds and cute decorations filled up the place.
There is no air conditioning in this place as all are outdoor seating.

There is no decent parking lot here so you just park wherever you can, as long you do not blovk the road or block the house of the people there.

For 4 person, we ordered 6 dishes and we finished all!

Herbal Kampung Chicken Soup.
Served in a tall claypot, as it was raining when we came, the soup warmed our body and open up our taste buds immediately.
The chicken and the herbs are well stewed to create such a great taste.

See the bottom of the pot, all are good ingredients.

Kiln Roasted Kampung Chicken
What's so great about kampung chicken? The are good is because they are rear in open, not caged thus the meat are QQ.
This is the signature dish that must order when visit here.
The marination of the chicken was savoury, and the skin is very crispy. It is a very well-done dish, and we have to use the gloves and scissor to eat with our hands.

Salt Baked Tilapia via Kiln Roast
The crux of this dish is, the fish must be fresh or else it will not be good.
No other marination needed. Fresh fish, washed & gutted clean and wrapped with salt & bake it.

Indeed, it is fresh, as you can taste the sweetness of the sea from the meat.

Kiln Roasted Pork Trotter
The meat are tender and soft. The skin is QQ, rubbery but it can be softer a little bit more. Overall this is good.

3 Cups Brinjals
A cup of wine, dark soya sauce & sesame oil - that is the base of sauce as I cooked 3 cups chicken at home.
Mum love brinjals very much that it is well cooked til soft and goes well with the sauce and rice.

Stir Fry Cabbage
My man finished most of this dish as he believes these vegetables can help to wash away the oils from other food.
Cabbage is crunchy and up to expectation.

Bonus photos taken at the back of the place- near to the toilet.

Last photos of what the remains of the pork trotter & the roasted chicken

Madam Kwan's
Address : Lot F-001, Mid Valley Southkey, 1, Persiaran Southkey 1, Southkey, 80150 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia

A chain restaurant owned by Madan Kwan herself, the brand is well known throughout the country.
The restaurant specialises in Malaysian food that is prepared and cooked in traditional & original ways.
The place we went is the one at The Mall SouthKey JB, it is big, bright, clean and airy. The staff are friendly and thoughtful.

We ordered : 2 nasi lemak, 1 char kway Teow and 1 horfun - all are in big servings.

The rice of the nasi lemak is very intense, the aroma of coconut milk soaked through every bit of the nasi.
Curry chicken is tender, and the curry is tasty. This dish is up to our expectation.

Horfun and char kway teow are full of wok hei, ingredients are fresh. Squids and prawns are considered big size.

Chendol & Burbur cha cha are the taste of my parents' childhood, and they are big servings.

Hou Hou Mei Restaurant (好好味)
Address: 1, Jalan Indah 5/7, Taman Bukit Indah, 81200 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia

This photo was from goggle

This area is very notorious for food, whether it is coffeeshops or private eateries that open as early as 7am or even much earlier!
Surrounded by residences and school, there are alot of locals that come here everyday to purchase all needed household supplies.
There are also mini markets and many household products selling here too. The whole are feels so old schooled
This coffeeshop is located near to Kip WTM so for those who been to Kip, I am sure you know what am I talking about.

Back to this coffeeshop, we came here at about 720am and it is very crowded that no table is available that we need to wait for about 10minutes.

I ordered a kopi siew dai & shredded chicken dry hor fun.
He ordered a kopi o & fried kwayteow + mee.
Total damage about RM16.

So far, coffees from any local coffeeshop or private eateries are mostly GOOD.

The stall he ordered from is actually the cai png stall.
It is  buffet style where you pick what you want & just pay.
The taste of a simple fried kway teow mee is full of wok hei and we love it very much.

The shredded chicken hor fun is well cooked & infused in well mixture of sauces.
The prawn is very fresh and the soup is tasteful to my surprise.

Here are more photos I took here for your reference.

Moons Cafe 满满满满满满

Address: 20, Jalan Molek 2/2, Taman Molek, 81300 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia

There are many restaurants that are on similar concepts in JB.
Moons Cafe is one of them that caught my attention.

We ordered a coffee (old man), lime juice, nasi ayam bryani & nasi nonya curry chicken lemak.

Nasi Nonya Curry Chicken Lemak is sooooooooooo pretty!
Not only it look pretty, it tasted great too.
Chicken is well stewed in the curry that it is well absorbed and tender.
The curry itself is rich and thick which is up to our expectation as personally I cooked good curry at home too.

Nasi Ayam Bryani caught our attention, we tasted the rice itself first and it burst our taste bud.
Just only the rice itself is already a star, it is deeply infused with all spices that it no need further enhancement from the curry or chilli anymore. This is the best bryani I ever had.
The red chicken curry is thick and flavorful too. Chicken is freshly cooked and soft.

We are very happy with Moons.
Here are more photos we had here.

强记砂煲鸡饭

Address: 51, Jalan Pendekar 17, Taman Ungku Tun Aminah, 81300 Skudai, Johor, Malaysia

When the night come, diners can choose to eat indoor or outdoor.

One of the best charcoal cooked claypot rice I ever had!
The rice is well cooked that I can every single grain.
Chicken is well marinated and soft. There are few slices of lup cheong and a dash of salted fish. Taste heavenly.

The old cucumber soup is well stewed that all the ingredients from goes into the flavorful soup, and we do not feel thirsty at all.
The claypot fish - the gravy is very good with aromatic sesame oil whereas the fish itself is average as it is not blend well with the sauce.
Ngoh hiang and fried vegetables are nice, up to our expectation. My folks are looking forward for a second visit.

補镬佬福建面 Restoran Uncle Pou Wok

Address: 44, Jalan Permas 9/2, Bandar Baru Permas Jaya, 81750 Masai, Johor, Malaysia

The star of this restaurant is the KL Fried Hokkien Mee which is black in coloured with big serving of pork lards.
Fried Hokkien Mee lived up to its reputation, tasting savory with a hint of sweetness in it.

We ordered pork ribs (boneless), prawn egg and lettuces too and all are to our liking,
There are several outlets in Johor, google it for your preferred location.

Hao You Dian Xin Dim Sum
Address: 1, Jalan Bakawali 50, Johor Jaya, 81100 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia

The drinks and dim sum belong to the owner of the coffee shop. Order whatever you fancy then shout for "bill" where the in-charge staff will come around for payment.
The dim sums here are overall not bad, so far so good. Congee is nice, perfect for my dad's taste.

As this is a coffeeshop, there are also individual stall that operate by private owners.
We ordered Shredded chicken + wanton noodles - there is no Char Siew meat for this stall.

Hong Kong styled Chee Cheong Fun which is ok, if we were given more gravy, it will be better tasted.

Warung Roti Canai Bukit Chagar

394, Jalan Tengku Azizah, Bukit Chagar, 80300 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia

In Singapore, we call this Roti Prata, in Malaysia, this is known as Roti Canai.
Located very near to Woodland checkpoint, it is very popular with Singaporeans who were on foot and those who drives.
Even local Malaysian like the place too as those who stay in Johor Bahru while working in Singapore, they like to tuck a meal there before crossing the borders.

The setting of the place is very simple and old schooled tuck shop kind, there is no aircon here at all so it can be quite hot.
For the sake of the food, many people like us are willing to soak a little in the sun.

It is in hot demand that queues will form before the shop opens.

The roti canai here are crispy and hot, we love the crunchy texture that blend perfectly with the shiok curry.

The mee hoon soto is vert delicious too, the soup has alot of spices!

Chaah Noodles
41, Jalan Sagu 18, Taman Daya, 81100 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia

What brings me here?
It is their handmade noodles!
There is a "working room" in the shop where staff will be there hand-making the noodles from scratch.

True enough, the noodles are all in Al Dente state. that mixed well with the ingredients.
Affordable price with great portions. Restaurant are kept clean and comfortable for diners.
Their soup is sweet and savory to our liking.
Staff are friendly and courteous too!

Gui Yuan Restaurant 桂苑港式點心茶樓
Address: 27, Jalan Dedap 8, Johor Jaya, 81100 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia
A well-loved old timer in Johor Jaya that is very crowded during meals time.
Ample parking lots that are shared among local plated cars & Singapore plated cars.
Operating start from 630am and by 745am, it is totally packed on a Sunday.
All the items here are all handmade as per double checked with the cashier.
The Char Siew Pao are ready good, soft and fluffy skin, fillings are all well flavored meats, there is not much FATS at all.
The Meat Pao is REAL BIG that we do not dare to order, it must be good.
Century egg + minced meat porridge is average but still acceptable.
Lor Mai Gai - is slightly wet type with their more made sauce + well marinated tender chicken - I LIKE.
The steamed brinjals are steamed to super soft that my mum loved it.
The rest of the dim sums are up to expectations, up to standard.
Except for pork ribs & chicken feet, we prefer them to be much softer.
Overall is still ok.

Johor Jaya Weekend Morning Roadside Market
Address;  91, Jalan Dedap 14, Johor Jaya, 81100 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia
https://goo.gl/maps/sfAyE8Az2kJw9eor6

This friendly market opens only on Saturday and Sunday from 0700 - 1100hrs
Open-air market and is pretty hot, the vendors opened their stalls from the boot of their cars or vans.
If it rains, they will just wrap up ASAP.

As we walk further into a closed space, the sellers here operate from real stalls via dismantlable tentages.

My parents are exceptionally excited to be here as the last time we actually shopped in this kind of "open air" markets in Singapore was decades ago. The nostalgic feeling, they received made them great shoppers.
Even my sonny, this is his very first time to be soaked in the air of such market that it is such an eye opener for him.

Just to highlight what to expect here : Various consumable items like ready to eat cooked foods - Nasi Lemak, Cakes, Soya Bean Drinks, Popiah  etc.. to perishable items like dried products, handmade noodles, fresh fruits, fresh vegetables etc.
Nonedible items : kitchen ware, towels, carpets, clothing, chopping boards and etc..

Johor Jaya is a self-suffice community that there are plenty of choices of food whether it is hawker center, coffee shops or restaurants. There are pharmacies, banks, wet market, hardware shops, tyre shops, sport hall etc. There are many Singapore cars spotted here too.

Here are the photos to share here:

Kip Wanton Mee Noodles

Address: 31, Jalan Indah 5/7, Taman Bukit Indah, 81200 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia

Another mafia in Indah area, Kip is located right next to Restoran Fuzhoumian which I visited twice (see reviews below).
It looks very simple outside BUT, once we entered, we were overwhelmed by the crowds. It was about 1030am and luckily there is still 1 table for us. What amazed us further was that we noticed that there were several tables which are occupied by Indian families. At this moment, we realized that this place is really a mafia here and we look forward for the meal.

We opted for the original version, which is plainer in colour. You may request for dark sauce version.
I ordered a small bowl of mee kia while he ordered a big bowl of mee pok.
Though the WTM looks plain but it is actually very flavorful, each strand of noodles is well blended into the sauce.

The wantons and fried wantons are wrapped fully and tightly with good amount of fillings, they taste good too.

Glad that my man is very happy with this meal with a damage of MYR31.

Round 2, we came again with my parents at 0730hrs.
We ordered 4 bowls original WTM but 3 small bowls and 1 big bowl.
And the braised chicken feet.

Small Bowl

Big Bowl

The fillings are tightly filled in the skin and very deeply flavored.

皇后茶餐室天外天 Restoran Sky Beyond

1&3jalan, Jalan Pendekar 9, Taman Ungku Tun Aminah, 81300 Skudai, Johor, Malaysiahttps://goo.gl/maps/PeUjbm9nV1RCw1Mw8

A coffee shop located in the well-known "Queen's Garden" which is also very popular with food hunters.
We reached here at 7am as seen in below photo where the skies were barely broke.

The reason why we are here is because of the Chee Cheong Fun (CCF).

This CCF is tag along with other Yong Tau Foo's(YTF) ingredients which are mostly handmade with the owners.

We ordered 2 slices of CCF and topped with a few ingredients (fish cake, fried dumpling & fried prawn cake).
CCF is very Q, chewy, soft and silky. It is so silky that it slipped through my mouth. It blended well with their sauce, and the sauce is not thick like Singapore's style.
YTF are good too, fried dumpling & fried prawn cake are good flavored and tasted great when freshly fried.

Fried Kway Teow (FKT) - it is cooked upon each order and we requested for darker colour.
Taste nice at piping hot, it comes with fish cake slices, cockles (hum) and prawns. Glad that both hums and prawns are fresh and are not overcooked. Overall, still not bad.

Dim Sumss - we ordered chicken feet, pork ribs and siew mai.
The gravies for chicken feet & pork ribs are very nice. Pork ribs are soft and tender to my liking.
Chicken feet, though soft but still prefer to simmer a little longer.
Siew mai is still not bad.

Other than ordering from above 3 stalls, there is WTM, pork noodles, porridges and etc.

Kedai Makan New Eastern

Address: 86, Jalan Abdullah, Pekan Muar, 84000 Muar, Johor, Malaysia

An old brand that had been standing here weathering through the time.
The old school decorated restaurant has not changed any of the interior since the grandfather's days of the current owner.

The current cook behind the stove is the 2nd generation who is the father of the cashier. The cashier who is the 3rd generation, is looking forward to taking over the stove job from his father in the near future.

Hainanese chicken chop and fried ric, portions were big, and price were reasonable.
Fried egg comes together with the Hainanese chicken chop that blended perfectly with their secret brow sauce.
Fried rice is good, every grain was not spared from the wok fire.

This is a good place for young Singaporean kid to understand what the feel was from decades ago.

Keijometo
Address:3, Jalan Chengai, Taman Melodies, 80250 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia

We came 10 minutes before it open and we are 4th in the queue!
Standing under the sun with umbrella. In my heart, I was telling myself "you better be good".
90% of the customers that queued with me were Singaporeans, I even heard that the boss is also a Singaorean.

What so famous here are the matcha related beverages and the Japanese's Sandos (sandwiches)
We each got ourself a cold drink and ordered all the 3 types of sandos on the menu.

Tamago Sando

Tamago Mentai Sando

Chicken Katsu Sando

No regret standing under the sun, these sandos are really fantastic!

D’ Cafe

Address: 9, Jalan Kelewang, Taman Sri Tebrau, 80050 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia

This is a very cozy cafe that has a young service team.
We came at 11am and this place is occupied by a big handful of customers, it will be full during meat times.

Once we enter, we will be ushered to a table, followed up being served ice water. This is a very good gesture because the weather outside is super-hot where we can catch our breaths before we start checking on the menus.

We each ordered a drink and a main to share, I ask for extra plate and utensils and I am pleased that this request was met as I came across cafes that the staff actually forgotten about my request, and I have to ask again.

He ordered an Americano while I got a Cappuccino - both are standard good taste and met our expectation.

The main we ordered is "King's Breakfast" - it comes in a good serving without complain.

The place is well lit with cozy atmosphere and well decorated.

Even the toilet area is nicely decorated.

Parking spaces are limited and alot Singapore's cars. Here already got 3 out of 4 parked.  I can tell that this place is well liked by locals and Singaporeans too.

忍者哥哥
Address: 88, Jalan Tombak 1, Taman Sri Tebrau, 80050 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia

A house turned into a eatery that specialized in Penang foods.

The decoration of this place is simple and rather big.
The crew are very friendly and chatty.

We are here for the lor mee which is very similar to the one in Singapore.

Penang Lor Bak - tasted not bad but the serving size was small.

Instead of braised pork bellies, plain sliced pork is used. They also use YouMian instead of flat yellow noodles.

The nasi lemak, Boss took it from a Malay supplier which has an additional fragrance on the rice. This is very delicious that it is very well-liked by the customers here.

Tien Tien Lai Kopitiam 桃源面家
Address: 59, Jalan Bakawali 50, Johor Jaya, 81100 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia

The famous flying WTM in Johor Jaya which is also very famous with many foodies out for yummies huntings.
The noodles texture is very thin mee kia that cooked till chewy.
Wanton is up to expectation- standard kind.
Fishball handmade and yummy.
Chicken feet just melted once I put inside the mouth.
Total Damage RM35.7

Restoran FuZhouMian
Address: 29, Jalan Imdah 5/7, Taman Indah, 81200 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia

We purposely came here for the lor mee but SOLD OUT and it is only 11am!!!!
So, we ordered bee hoon kway dry and Gan Lao Mian.

Gan Lao Mian is flavorful with their inhouse sauce.
Guessed the noodles are handmade too as it tastes better than those usual shops I had.
Topped with mini meat fritters which I believed are handmade too, they are well marinated.

This bee hoon kueh itself is handmade as every piece of kueh is at different sizes and shapes.
The texture of handmade is really much better than machine made as it is very chewy and soft.
Ikan bilis are very crispy, they are freshly fried, there is no "expired oil smell" like some stall I tried before.
The pork slices are tender and well marinated.

Next time must come super early for the lor mee, stay tuned for my update.

This shop is right next to Restoran Kip which is another notorious wtm, guessed I will come to try some other time as the place was crowded when I walked past.

One week later, we came again and reached here at 650am, waiting for the shop to open.

Finally, we got our FuZhou Lor Mee and he is so happy.

The gravy is full of cabbage base though thickened and stewed with black sauce. There is no egg content in the gravy.
The noodles used is their homemade YouMian instead of yellow flat noodle with toppings like braised pork slices, cabbages, black fungus while garnished with fried garlic and spring onion.
The braised pork slices are tender and flavorful.

Ri Sheng Vegetables&Food Sdn.Bhd
Address:No 19 & 21, Jalan Dedap 23, Johor Jaya, 81100 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia

Located opposite Oriental Kopi in Johor Jaya and we happened to park in front of this shop.
It is very crowded, and I decided to go in for a peek. This big shop sells fresh food and sundry products.

Well, the supposed "peek" turned out into "marketing for me and ended up bought some dried food stuff and Ghee Hiang sesame oil which I have been eating since my Penang trip last year.

I was too concentrated on my shopping that I forgotten to take more photos. Anyway, I will be coming back again.

Back again here for second time, and this round I managed to snap a few photos of the interior and a little share of my purchase...

Oriental Kopi (华阳)
Address: 30, Jalan Dedap 22, Johor Jaya, 81100 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia
A household name that all local and tourist loves, especially for the famed Hainanese coffee.
The HQ is in Kuala Lumpur where it has flapped the wings to most of the big cities in Malaysia.

There are several locations in Johor here, but I like the one at Johor Jaya as it is shopfront with ample parking.
Johor Jaya is also a paradise for food lovers and there is a morning market that is available only in weekends.
I love this place very much and am sure for repeat visits so I will update here whenever I visit. That's why this section is pretty long.

First Visit
We are here for the newly released product of this shop - Purple Egg Tarts which left me unforgotten since I had in KL one week before.

The cups are purple because it is made of yam whereas the fillings are the standard custard egg which is smooth and silky.
Crusty and flaky base that has a sweet touch in the mouth.

After reviewing the menu, we ended up ordering fried mee siam and nasi lemak!
To our surprise, they are really good!

The dry mee siam is a common dish ordered from most tables, it is spicier than the usual dry mee siam I had and indeed taste great.

The nasi lemak, rice is pretty fragrance, and you can literally count grain by grain. The fried chicken is deep fried til it is still tender inside, it is well marinated. Sambal chilli is good that goes well with everything.

This photo of Rojak was extracted from my visit in KL shop which taste average.

The coffee is indeed good that I bought a few boxes of prepacked coffee for my fixes at home.

Second Visit
We are here again for the purple egg tarts as it is for limited time only.
As we had already had our breakfast, we just came here for a coffee, purple tarts and toast.
I ordered for "large size" of coffee, and I got a beer mug which was ages since I had "Kopi Gek Lak" which means coffee in glass mug. I even ordered 3 sets of take-away which means buy 6 pieces of Yam egg tarts and free 1 original egg tart.

Third Visit
We came here again before lunch hours and was in the queue outside waiting for a table.
The aroma of freshly baked egg tarts filled the air.

After 15 minutes wait, we got a table at the other corner, and I saw this old-schooled switchboard that it really tempts me to play. My grandma's house used to have these switches scattered all over the place.

The butter-kaya toast is good. Bread is toasted in perfect texture which is crispy at the outside yet soft in the inside. The butter & kaya are generously spread. The kaya has a taste of gula melaka which is to our likings.

These are the original taste egg tarts which is also very nice.
The butter dense cup with smooth and silky filling are so fragrance.

Fourth Visit
Visited on the mid of August as I need to restock my coffee and true enough, there is no more purple egg tarts.
This round, we have a party of 5 so we can order more choices from the menu. Everyone is happy with the food and commented that they are very delicious. We ordered below respectively: Penang Char Kway Teow, Fried Mee Siam with chicken drumstick, Fried Mee Siam with fried chicken and Nasi Lemak with chicken.

M

This is our "N" visit, today we are at the outlet located in Mid Valley South Key which is packed as usual. We had already got our breakfast, but dad is having craving for the coffee so here we are again....

Assam Pedas Bali Puri
Address: No. 597, Jalan Kenanga 29/19, Bandar Indahpura, 81000 Kulai, Johor, Malaysia

Newly opened yet receiving a lot of attention from the local. The video of the Assam Pedas Fish Tail was served in a piping hot claypot and the smell was "OMG".

The restaurant was full during dinner time.
We reached this restaurant at around 530pm and we were the first customers. At first, my man was still commenting that "how come there is no other customer except us", nevertheless we still went ahead to enter the restaurant which we have no regrets.
The signature dish for this restaurant is Asam Fish where you can choose fish head, fish tail or fish slices and we opted for fish tail. The assam pedas is very good, indeed sour and spicy that it opens up our stomachs. It is very appetizing that to our liking.

Another must order dish is the Curry Prawns, the curry they used is different from what I usually had. Heard from the staff that the curry paste is a secret recipe from their chef. We also nearly finished all the gravy.
This is another picture taken on the curry prawns after I moved the garnishes aside.

Ordered this stir-fried lettuce just to balance up with the assam pedas & curry.
This goody old shoe will always taste good and crunchy as it is a very simple dish, unless the chef is so underkilled to overcooked it.

Yong Peng Duck Noodle (正宗永平鴨麵)

Address; 83700 Yong Peng, 5, jalan komersial 3, Pusat Komersial, 83700 Yong Peng, Johor, Malaysia

We purposely stopped by Yong Peng for our second breakfast, this town is famous for all food lovers.
I have been targeting Yong Peng Duck Noodles for quite some time and finally we are here.
Previously, located in a small coffee shop with a laid-back setting that is well surrounded by trees and now they have shifted to a new premise which is new, clean and tidy.

Mr and Mrs Wong have been in the business for 40 years, from an old recipe from Mr Wong's mother.
As a Hokkien, I have had the similar taste since I was young. It is the kind of standard old school Hokkien braising with a touch of various herbs. Hokkien's braised food is more salty and darker thick stock.
The ducks are not the usual kind I had in Singapore, the skin look thinner and lesser fats. The ducks are well braised and tender to our liking. The noodles they use is flat yellow noodles - the kind for Lor Mee in Singapore.
Ordered a serving of braised pork belly which is flavorful and chewy which melted in my mouth.

Fish balls are handmade which are soft and good texture.

Here at the second visit, we managed to order the WTM, fishball soup & duck noodle soup.

開張海鮮館 Restoran Khye Cheang

Address: 57a, Jalan Stulang Laut, 5, Jalan Ibrahim Sultan, 80300 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia

We had already eaten our breakfast, but it does not serve coffee so we went around looking for coffee near our accommodation.
After driving around Stulang beach, I saw this coffee shop that is quite packed with crowd, so we went in. We chanced upon it which is a true hidden gem.

We ended up ordering a WTM and 2 share of siew mais along with 2 coffee and 1 milo.

The WTM is perfectly cooked, though this bowl seems garnished with not much sauce , it is actually very flavorful.
The siew mais are wonderful too, Sonny actually tome he was too full, after having 1 piece, he went order another share.

WW Laksa House
Address: NO:36A1, Jalan Kolam Air, Taman Kolam Air, 80100 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia

A family runs business that has been running since 1978 which was started out as a pushcart business along the roadside..
The current chefs behind the stove are the second generations and the third generations are already helping out like taking order and other stuff.

Beside selling laksa, they also sell fishball noodles and home made otahs.
The laksa here is the type we like. Thick gravy that is rich with dried shrimps based.

Fishball noodles are standard kind that is taste nice too.

Hubby even ala carte ordered a share of hums, which is so fresh, chewy and spicy.

The otahs are fresh too, pure meat paste.
Overall, we are very happy with this place.

YM Teochew Mee Pok 玉梅潮州面薄
Address: Ja, Jalan Lumba Kuda, Tanjung Puteri, 80300 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia

Another childhood tastes found!
Located in a humble coffee shop that patronize most by the locals.
The 3 of us are the only non-locals here.
The base of the noodles is similar like the ones we had in Singapore.
It serves with slight vinegar but there is a bottle of vinegar of each table for us to top.
Al dente noodles that are serve with generous toppings. Fishballs are handmade which is very tasty.
The chilli used in the mee pok is also another home receipe.
The boss, who is also the cook, is very friendly too.

Mr Sotong - Bukit Indah Aeon first floor

The original shop is located in Taman Sentosa I visited when I was a kid.
Now Mr Sotong had expanded to few more outlets and the one I am visiting today is located in Aeon Bukit Indah which is near to 2ND link and Aeon is full of Singaporeans.
Mr Sotong is very famous for all squid related snacks and other local titbits.
I will still come back here for more purchases and will update here again.

Eng Hin 永興福州餅麵廠

Address: 14, Jln Besar, Taman Sembrong, 83700 Yong Peng, Johor, Malaysia

This is a well-known place for traditional FuZhou biscuits. Most of the items here are handmade, including the noodles and most pastries.
Good place to drop by if you are looking for that "long lost taste."

Yuan Yean Fishball Eating House (元延,原创永平正宗西刀鱼圓)

Address: 122A, 123, Jln Besar, Taman Selatan, 83700 Yong Peng, Johor, Malaysia

Decent and comfortable handmade fishball noodles since 1988.
The place is clean and airy, though parking is limited.
Be careful of hidden fishbones in the fishballs as they are handmade

Pelangi City 彩虹城

Address: Stall no. 11 Food Centre, Jalan Biru, Taman Serene, 80400 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia.

Humble setting in a small hawker center that is directly opposite of San Lou.
This place is well liked by locals and Singaporeans as there are quite a handful Singapore's cars.

The boss is the chef who whipped up real delicious food.
Serves by few waitresses who have limited english and in the end I have to order from the boss who was happen busy behind the stoves.

Menu is limited but that is enough to kill. However, I heard that there are some hidden dishes where you can check with the boss if today got any special menu.

We ordered 4 dishes and finished all. The fish is very fresh, and I like the way it is cooked. The bones of the fish went to the cat community here. I will come back here again. I heard there is a hidden dish named "chye poh fish head".

Botak Cafe
Address: Jalan Jutawan Satu, Kampung Atap, 82000 Pontian, Johor, Malaysia

We decided on an impromptus trip to Pomtian on a Sunday when Sonny woke up super early to check the situations at the customs.
Decided on this place for our breakfast menu at the last minute too.
We are the only tourists here! The place has a decent fare of local crowds who are here for coffee and toast (based on what I saw on their tables).
Staff are friendly and flexible, which made my day.
The menu is limited but there is another stall selling hot noodles.
We ordered :
1 Kopi O
1 Kopi Siew Dai
1 Milo
3 Fried Bee Hoon
1 set regular toast
1 garlic bread toast

Fried bee hoon is the "standard" kind we usually get.
However, it is fried with alot of beansprouts and green vegetables it has been long I see a fried bee hoon with so many ingredients as those we have are either plain fried bee hoon and fried bee hoon with few miserable strands of beansprouts.

Sonny said the milo is thick, unless those he always had.. taste so thin.
The Man said his Kopi O is power, the aftertaste linger on his tastebuds.
My kopi siew dai is also very thick and frangrant and it does come with an aftertaste too.
Overall coffee is really very good here.

Regular toast is well toasted to just nice testure. The kaya taste good too but how I wish they can give more butter.
Garlic toast is insanely nice, the homemade garlic cream blend perfect with the toast.

Sin Kee Pontian Wanton Mee
Address: 1120, Jalan Bakek Jaya Utama, Kampung Atap, 82000 Pontian, Johor, Malaysia

We feel very welcoming here, the staff guided us that we find our own table and place order at the front.
This place is packed at 11am and we were lucky to have a table at a corner.
Pickled chillis are free flow, so generous.
We ordered 3 plates of Wanton Mee & 4 pieces of Otahs.

Otahs are soft, not that spicy but still nice.
Wanton Mee, al dente noodles in tomato base and come along with a bowl of soup that contains 3 wanton & 2 fishballs.
The man commented that this is his taste when he was a child when staying with his grandma at Kallang Place.
I tasted mine shortly and it does taste old schooled. The kind I had when it was selling for $1.50 per plate.

Foon Yew Laksa
Address : 16, Jln Stulang Laut, Taman Stulang, 80300 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia
Heard that this laksa is very famous in this area. It was located in Foon Yew School before it moved over to current location which is still not too far away of the original location.

There is alot of parking space here as this "pit stop" like recreation area is lined with several stalls.
Open setting here, so it is very hot and humid as it is all outdoor though some seats are covered with beach umbrellas.

The choices of ingredients to go with my laksa is too much to choose.
Most of the ingredients here are handmade like fishballs and yong tau foo stuff.
Staff are friendly and helpful, and they are ready to help.

The laksa is nice but not amazing, slightly over rated to me as I prefer thicker gravy,
Though the gravy is flavorful but it is kind of watery.

There are many locals patronize here which I believe they prefer the lighter taste of laksa gravy.
Please come before meal hours as this place is real pack despite it is open seating.

古来华叔火蒸鸡 Restaurant Kulai Hua Shu
Address: Jalan Kulai - Kota Tinggi, 81000 Kulai, Johor
https://goo.gl/maps/eoFtAkZM3eYDusc98

We came from Putuo Village, it is just 5 minutes' drive away and it is located at the main road.
This restaurant is located hidden inside a metal related factory.
The food, everything we ordered was finished.
The signature dish here is the chicken and it needs a total of 8 hours to prepare and to roast. It is easily cut with a spoon, very soft and delish.
We ordered a whole Threadfin in Hong Kong style, indeed fresh and good.
Pig stomach soup is very flavorful. Overall, it is so yummy.

Came across a BIG centipede which the staff caught it and fed to the Arowana. Love to relaxing atmosphere here, there is river, waterfall, mini farms and etc. Bunnies are roaming freely in the premises.
It is indeed a hidden gem in Kulai.

Tea Garden Bukit Indah
Address: No 11 & 15, Jalan Indah 15/1, Taman Bukit Indah, 81200 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia

It is buffet style where you pick the food you want and pay at the counter.

We are all very happy with this meal as all the dishes we ordered are so tasty.

Yoon Lai 云来
Address: 646, Jalan Gangsa 6, Taman Timur, 81000 Kulai, Johor, Malaysia

This is actually a coffee shop selling dim sum as well as other local fares.
The dim sums are not bad though the barbecue pork buns are BIG and good.
We ordered Chee Cheong Fun and Fried carrot cakes too which we are quite happy with them.
In general, this place is over-rated though there are few articles singing praises about this place.

KUU by Tea Garden (Aeon Tebrau)
Address: S19, Second Floor, Aeon Tebrau City Shopping Centre, 1, Persiaran Desa Tebrau, Taman Desa Tebrau, 81100 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia

Dad ordered Longtong, Boss ordered Hainanese Chicken rice, Sonny ordered Nasi Lemak and i opted for Curry noodles.

晨饮 CY TEA & COFFEE
Address: 303, Jln Kenanga 29/9 Bandar Indapura Kulai 81000, Johor Malaysia

A wonderful place to hide from the sun, chanced upon this cafe while we were fixing the car nearby.
The place is clean, neat and spacious. The staff are very responsive and polite.
The food here is not bad and looks nice on the serving plates.

126 美食阁
Address: Bandar Indahpura, 81000 Kulai, Johor, Malaysia

We both finished or meals and had a very satisfied stomach.

Hock Sang Restoran
Address: 1, Jalan Indah 16/8, Taman Bukit Indah, 81200 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia

This is our first place to punch cards once we reached Johor!
We are here for takeaway as it is close to 12am, and we still rush to check in our accommodations.
The dinning crowds was considered heavy despite such hour.
Just the Chao Tar Mee Hoon & Mee Goreng for 4 stomachs.  Tasty and good though everyone still prefers San Lou.`

Restoran Lai Kee
Address: Malaysia, Johor, Skudai, Taman Ungku Tun Aminah, Jalan Pahlawan 2, 邮政编码: 81300.

This area is known as "Queen's Garden" is the best place for all hungry stomachs.
Lai Kee is well located along rows of eateries and coffeeshop. Located along the stretch of restaurants and coffee shops.
You will never find any hungry stomach here.
The previous time when I was here for Min's Corner, I was attracted by the crowds of customers queuing here so I decided to come here this round as I cannot shake off the image of long queues off my mind.
Comfort and decent fish ball noodles with chewy noodles texture and few other toppings aside from nice and bouncy fish balls. Generous amount of serving at very well affordable price.
Do note that it is served without vinegar base.

Yu Link Coffeeshop (玉麟咖啡店)
Address: 1, Jalan Indah 1/2, Taman Bukit Indah, 81200 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia

This place is full of crowds in the morning. Despite the crowds, the place is very airy.
This local coffeeshop serves local fares and these are what we ordered:
Dad is very happy with the mee rebus and the porridge.
The 2 boys are very satisfied with their fried noodles breakfast.
I ordered Wantan mee which is famous here and indeed, it is very tasty.

BroLokLok (串哥哥)
Address: 41, Jalan Mutiara Emas 2A, Taman Mount Austin, 81100 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia

We chose to stay in Austin because of this notorious LokLok Truck.
Open daily from 730pm - 2am unless update on their Facebook.
Spoilt for choices, we ended up ordered 2 rounds of LokLok each round cost about MYR65.
The food is very fresh, you can choose either to boil or fried.
I love the mini crab the most while he loves the prawn which were topped with their special spices after deep fried. As for Sonny, he loves the chicken meat which is also topped with spices after deep fried.
Overall, it was an enjoyable experience dining openly in the car park.

Restoran Gim Cheng (锦成差楼)
Address: 2, 2, 1, Jalan Sagu 36, Taman Daya, 81100 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia

An old timer located not far from Austin Heights. Most of the dim sums are handmade, there are many choices to choose from. The porridge is very smooth and fragrant.
A place that is very popular with locals and also Singaporeans.
Look at the amazing crowds, glad that we are here early.

Restaurant Soon Kee 顺记苦瓜汤
Address: 336, Jalan Kenanga 29/9, Bandar Indahpura, 81000 Kulai, Johor, Malaysia
https://goo.gl/maps/qT6fnesoso5A4A9Q8

Beside serving the star menu, which is bitter gourd soup, they also serve other Tze Char food as well.
Very "homecooked" feel on all the dishes.
The soup is flavorful, the porkchop is crispy, but the marination should be longer.
Generally decent food with reasonable price. Hmmm, Boss prefer this shop than KahKah Loke (佳佳乐) as this soup is much bitter than the latter. You can find my review of KahKah Loke (佳佳乐) is all the way down of this food blog.

Nanyang Kopitiam
Address: Jln Abdul Ghani, Kampung Padang Lalang, 84900 Tangkak, Johor Malaysia.
Tangkak is a town located at the edge of Johor state, bordering Malacca.
Nanyang is a decent and clean kopitiam serving a wide variety of food selections at affordable price.
This is the first negative review I have here:
The food taste is average, there is still many rooms for improvement, and I do not have the intention to come back again.

和美饼家的糕饼 (Hua Bee Bakery)
Address: 10, Jalan Solok, Kampung Padang Lalang, 84900 Tangkak, Johor, Malaysia
https://goo.gl/maps/xoSLp4i3hkeqD5EHA

Very well known in the region, customers come from far all the way from Penang and Singapore.
If you are here for Tau Sar Piah, you must come at a specific timing as shown on the photo above. We were here at around 1230pm and waited 20 minutes before the Tau Sar Piah are ready.
The wrapping look like toilet paper, it is actually Heong Piah, size is rather small.
Will come back again.

Nasi Lemak Lobster
Address: 88, Jln Setia Tropika 1/7, Setia Tropika, 81200 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia

We ordered Nasi Lemak Boston lobster (XL) and 2 chicken chops.
Food was served fast and piping hot.
The lobster is fresh and goes well with the creamy white sauce.
The coconut rice is very fragrant, and they are using long grain rice - the one for Bryani.
Chilli is tip top, goes well with the rice.
Chicken chops were soft and well breaded with yummy black pepper sauce.

Loft Cafe by V
Address: 75, Jalan Impian Emas 5/1, Taman Impian Emas, 81300 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia

Newly opened by a getai artist - Yang Guang Ke Le
Last week was our first time to drop by to take-away a tiramisu which is very delish!
Today, we came here for a break after lunch nearby. It was a shame that service was slow, probably due to it is newly opened and also due to weekend crowds . Glad that staff are quite polite and hardworking so I will be giving the cafe another chance in months' time. Look forward for improvement.
Interior is nicely decorated with industrial minimalist theme. The ambience is cosy and everyone is chatting happily; this place is good for hangout with friends.

SF Bak Kut Teh 鑫圆肉骨茶
Address: 75, Jln Anggerik Emas 1, Taman Perusahaan Ringan Pulai, 81300 Skudai, Johor, Malaysia

Short waiting time with friendly and attentive staff.
The soup is really comforting and good. We had it refilled twice! Beside pork ribs, it comes with tau pok, meat balls and dried beancurd skin.
However, the pork ribs are slightly over-cooked, the pork balls are good
The tofus are delicious too, crispy outside and soft inside. Love the contrast of both soft and crisp inside my mouth.

Min Corner 民糕點

Address: Jalan Pahlawan 2, Taman Ungku Tun Aminah, Skudai, Johor, Malaysia

We were here at 8am and this restaurant is quite crowded. We were here for an hour; the turnover of customers is very high.

    The wok hei speaks everything!

2) Fried Dry Mee Siam - prepacked
It comes with few strandss of egg shreds, chicken wing (super tasty).

3) Nasi Lemak - prepacked
     Taste not bad.

4) Carrot Cake & Glutinous rice cake

This place must be well loved by the people who love traditional local food.

Ban Heong Seng Restaurant 万香城餐馆

Address: 新山, 113, Jalan Impian Emas 22, Taman Impian Emas, 81300 Skudai, Johor, Malaysia

Dinner tonight at Family's managed business. Had a chat with the 2nd generation boss, the recipe is from aunt who managed the outlet in KL while this outlet is helms by his dad.
Beggar's Chicken and specialty fish.
"During the Qing Dynasty , a starving beggar stole a chicken from a farm. To hide his loot, the beggar dug a hole and buried the chicken deep in mud. After nightfall, under the cover of darkness, the beggar dug up the mud caked chicken, tossed it onto a pile of burning twigs and branches, and fell asleep. When he woke up, the beggar retrieved the mud encased chicken from the smothering heap. The hungry beggar broke open the clay pod and a puff of freshly baked chicken aroma escaped into the air. Fate has it that the Emperor was passing by and caught a whiff of the alluring aroma. The King sat down to eat with the beggar, and he liked the chicken so much that he added it to the Palace menu."

Kou Foo Buns and Baking 口福包点与烘焙

Address : 26, Jalan Bestari 5/2, Taman Nusa Bestari, Johor Bahru, Malaysia
https://goo.gl/maps/Hdi7MB6MjfDjwfG99

We stumbled upon this place by chance.
There is no special decoration in the interior, just simple and airy.
Buns are all handmade, they are soft and flavorful fillings.
Boss loves chicken feet the most that he reviewed it "meat is meat, bone is bone - it just melted."

San Low Seafood Restaurant
Address: Jalan Merah 1, Taman Pelangi, 80400 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia
This legendary restaurant serves delish food at valuable price.
Came here a few times, the crowds are still as much as before. I will visit again so I will update when the day come.
There are many Singapore cars, they have a traffic warden here who managed the traffic and parking for all the customers. It is good to come before 6pm or else prepare to wait for tables., do note that there is no queue system at all, and it is rather messy when the doorway is over packed.
This signature bee hoon, never disappoint me! It is a must to order for me.
They sell meats of deer, wild boar, ostrich and rabbit too.

Fat Bamboo Cafe 肥竹
Address: 1488, Jalan Kampung Felda Taib Andak Off, 94, 81000 Kulai, Johor, Malaysia

Located at the end of Putuo Village which house a couple of Chinese Temples.
90% of the furniture is made from Bamboo, feel so laid-back and relaxing like you are in a Chinese Fairytale.
This cafe sells only beverages and light snacks like cakes and croissants.
Matcha latte is nice, whereas hot chocolate is abit too sweet as per Sonny's views.

Chi Bao Zi
Address : 49 Jalan Indah 1/1, Taman Bukit Indah, Johor Bahru , Malaysia

Heard that the restaurant was opened during Covid Pandemic.
This small shop has a Hong Kong feel, playing Theresa Teng's songs.
Most of the dim sum here is freshly handmade and they really taste good.
There is a self-service kiosk at the corner where you help yourself on the chilli sauce and cutleries.

The noodle is very tasty too, the texture of the noodle is Al Dente! And I am surprised that the noodles are from supplier.

Deep fried siew mai, this is special and tasty.
Char Siew Bao has a unique good taste, bun is soft, and the fillings are flavorful.
Glutinous rice is also very yummy, this is Sonny's favourite.
Unlike those standard traditional dim sum shop, the dim sum menu for this shop is limited but it is still worth to come as there is a buying point from this shop.

Restoran Rong Shu Xia

Address: Jalan Cermat 2, Taman Maju Jaya, 80400 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia

Friendly man serving traditional comfort food.
Love the handmade Al Dente kway teow that goes well with the fragrance herbal broth.
The special force behind this meal is the fried shallot which really enhances the soup to the next level.
We stopped by for breakfast before we kickstart our journey to Malacca.
Most of my family members love the innards very much that they are well stewed.
Pig blood - deeply missed by them, thankful that it just melted in the mouth.

Ming Ang Confectionary
Address: 7, Jalan Indah 15/3, Taman Bukit Indah, 81200 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia

From what i know there are another 2 outlets located near KSL and within City Square. If you need their locations, please google it. Personally, I always come to the one in Bukit Indah because it is near to the second link.

Ming Ang is a traditional Chinese bakery that is specialize in various Chinese biscuits like Heong Piah, Tau Sa Piah, Beh Teh Sor, Baked Chae Siew Pau and many more.
The inhouse coffee is one of my favorites too, thick and fragrance.
There are also many other choices of food products here, tour buses full of Singaporean always visit this store.
By the way, there is a shop next door selling Roasted products, it seems taste great as it is always crowded.
There is also a Money Changer here that I always see it flocked with customers too.

This is another favorite coffee of mine!

Visited again on 18 Aug 2023, "The Hungry Ghost" festival is not here yet Ming Ang has already started selling mooncakes.
Mooncake sell from 2 pieces box and 4 pieces box which come in a nice paper bag which is ideal for gifts.
The are quite few varieties available: Single egg yolk, pure white lotus, chocolate lava, yam and etc

I bought 2 pieces of single yolk mooncake to test first : Not bad, I think it is quite nice.
Most probaly, I will come back again to purchase at nearer dates.

And I chanced upon this legendary beverage here : Hor Ga Sai aka Tiger bite Lion.

Hiap Joo Bakery
Address: 13, Jalan Tan Hiok Nee, Bandar Johor Bahru, 80000 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia
https://goo.gl/maps/EczWVLcnDGrtFRda7

Directly opposite of Kin Wah, there is this 100 years old bakery - Hiap Joo Bakery

Currently managed by the 4th generation. This bakery was once belonged to an Englishman who handed over to the great grandfather of the current boss.

What impressed me about this place is they are still using the traditional wood fire, clay oven! This oven is 100 years old!

We are lucky to be here in the early morning and managed to buy some butter cake and banana cake which are their signatures. Most items will be sold out by noon, must come early.

This area is very popular with Singaporeans, there are many dining options here. The place was revamped for many photo taking spots here too.
I try not to come to this area because there are too many cars to drive around and the crowd here is also very scary.
I only come here for Hiap Joo otherwise you will not see me here.

Restoran Kin Wah

A typical breakfast place in a typical coffee shop.

Located directly opposite Hiap Joo and near to Sultan Iskandar Checkpoint (Woodlands), this is a great stop to start the day by having the breakfast and buying Hiap Joo.
The food serve here are very simple but taste really good.

This area is very popular with Singaporeans, there are many dining options here. The place was revamped for many photo taking spots here too.
I try not to come to this area because there are too many cars to drive around and the crowd here are also very scary.

Kuma Cheese Toast

Address: Sutera Mall, Jalan Sutera Tanjung 8/4, Taman Sutera Utama, 81300 Skudai, Johor, Malaysia
According to GoggleMap, it stated that Kuma Cheese Toast is "temporary closed"
Nevertheless, I believe there are few other outlets around, please google and check for your nearest locations.

Restoran Kah Kah Loke 佳佳乐苦瓜汤
The one we went was near Sutera Mall but now seems already moved.
However, not to worry as there are several outlets here. Just google it for the one nearest to you.
After a day under the sun, it is a good idea to have bitter gourd soup to cool you down.
Beside the signature soup, they are similar to other Zi Char where they have a vast menu to choose from.
Deep fried pork is very tasty, crispy and tender.

Everlasting Food Industries Sdn Bhd (Health Food)

Address: Lot 16053, Jln Teknologi 6, Kawasan Perindustrian, 84900 Tangkak, Johor, Malaysia
A haven for health-conscious friends.
Price is on the high side as all are health related products with an organic base.
I always come here to buy bird nest which are freshly cooked, and I think the bird nest are value for money.
I came again after Covid and found that this place is closed.

Sai Kee Kopi 434 Muar
Address: 121, Jalan Maharani, Taman Sri Emas, 84000 Muar, Johor, Malaysia

This coffee shop is pretty notorious here. Located right opposite the bus station and along the main road of Muar it is always packed with diners.
Glad that the staff are friendly, and service are fast.

Coffee is really good and aromatic.

Breads are toasted to my liking with nice butter and kaya.

The food is nice too, there are various lemaks to choose from.

The interior of Sai Kee is full of wooded elements, and it is very pretty place to take many photos.
It is also nicely decorated with pretty displays.

This is the inhouse shop where they sell freshly grinded coffee, there are quite a variety to choose from.

Actually, I been supporting this shop since my tour buses days.
Love the spiciness and big fillings. Beside fish meat otak, they also have prawn, squid & fish head too.
Highly recommended for everyone to stop by.

Jia Jia Bak Kuet Teh 东甲家家肉骨茶
Address: Taman Sentosa, 84900 Tangkak, Johor, Malaysia

Best in Tangkak area, we stopped by the place when we were driving up to Malacca before Covid.
Though parking lots are ample here, but they are quite a demand during peak hours.

Soup is thick dark herbal base which is to our liking.
Yam rice is flavourful too. Braised trotters are soft & juicy.
My man's favorite is the Braised Chicken Feets which is very soft.
