Kuala Lumpur which no need any introduction from me anymore as this is not my first blog on this vibrant city.
Aside for the delicious food we want to eat here, the other factor is to meet my chummy Cecila again whom sonny fondly greets her as "Godmother". It has been at least 8 years since they last met.
Sonny is an adult now, he no longer has time for us like he was younger, he has a tight working schedule, therefore we are very happy that he can go on this short trip with us. I hope to capture as much photos as possible, where the 4 of us having fun and creating memories.

168 Claypot Chicken Rice
Google Map: https://maps.app.goo.gl/yk6fYWeT51FThLTHA
I am always attracted to claypot chicken rice in KL, especially simmered over the hot charcoal!
Though there are some really good ones in Singapore but it seems that every charcoal cooked claypot chicken rice here in Kuala Lumpur are good. 168 claypot chicken is not exception too, it really enticed our tummies well!
Located right opposite of Sek Yuen restaurant which we will be going tomorrow, this humble coffee shop seems like a mafia here during meals time where throngs and throngs of diners flocking in for more the 30 years!
There are indoor seats within the coffee shop and also ample outdoor seatings located opposite too.
Upon our arrival, we saw that both indoor and outdoor tables were taken, we waited for 5 minutes for the coming table. Glad for the high turnover.
The waiting time for the claypot chicken rice is about 45 minutes so we ordered some stir fried dishes from the next stall to appetize our tummies first as we were famished.
I got this photo from google. |
Our appetizers consist of stir fried dry hor fun, sweet & sour pork and sliced pork with ginger and onions.
The stir fried dried hor fun caught us, it tasted very nice with strong wok hei.
Sweet & sour pork is standard taste that is up to our expectations.
Sliced pork with ginger and onion tasted average.
Next, here come the star of our dinner... Upon the serving of the claypot chicken rice, we were pleased to see the mouth-watering sight.
Every grain of the rice is well smoked with charcoal that sent the tantalising taste to our taste buds.
You can see this video that I got from Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/share/v/rWbnZe3woX6rzES8/?mibextid=w8EBqM
Kopi Street at Kota Damansara
Google Map: https://maps.app.goo.gl/qPHEPc3tm5xN3oLX6
Recommended by Chummy, this restuarant is 10 minutes drive away from my airbnb.
It is her first time here as well and glad that the food, service and ambience are up to expectations.
Upon our entry we noticed that there is quite a handful of tables outside were taken, the place is clean and airy.
The drinks we ordered so far are good... Ice coffee, milo mega, kopi-o and kopi siew dai.
Mine is prawn noodles and I am happy that the taste of umami is there, noodles are well cooked too.
3 of them had nasi lemak and they look happy with the food.
We ordered peanut butter toast and the standard kaya butter toast.
The breads are well toasted, fillings are generous and thick.
Petaling Street
It's Sonny first time here finally after watching numerous dramas, movies and videos on this place.
It is on his list to eat the famous mochi and soya bean.
Kim Soya Bean
Google Map: https://maps.app.goo.gl/NcLo2dBkD4Xzq6jL6
Located right opposite to Madam Tang Mochi POPO.
Here we ordered the black soya beancurd (black sugar), white soya beancurd (normal sweetener) and chilled soya bean milk.
Madam Tang Machi POPO - closed at 3pm
Google Map: https://maps.app.goo.gl/E4mKfeCnPj47PWvD7
Legendary grandma known for selling her famous mua chee at Petaling Street has sadly passed away at 79 years old
Madam Tang has been running her widely popular mua chee stall for more than 50 years at Petaling Street.
Using her own recipe for the sweet glutinous Chinese treat, her stall is very well known here for many years.
The stall is currently run by the 2nd & 3rd generation, preserving the exact taste and texture of mua chee from Madam Tang’s days who passed away in July 2023.
We had a small walk in the Lalaport mall which is pretty mega that covers everything that everyone needs.
Anyway, we are here to chill and chose Hoshino Coffee, which is one of my favourites.
Beside good sando and nice coffee, this is really a great place to chill and chat with friends and family.
Hoshino never fail me in all my visits in regards of Singapore, Malaysia and Japan.
Side Track: Lalaport is a new mall that was just opened few months ago and it is built directly on the ground of the old Pudu Prison.
Today, only the main gate of the prison stood behind to remind us about this heritage site on Kuala Lumpur.
Restoran Sek Yuen 适苑酒家
Google Map : https://maps.app.goo.gl/k4TemUaoE8t5QdqJ6
This Michelin awarded restaurant serves top notched Cantonese food and it is also located in Pudu right opposite of 168 Claypot chicken rice.
One of the oldest name in Kuala Lumpur that has been standing here since 1948.
Though there is no five star service from the staff here, but the staff here are all very helpful and friendly that converses mainly in Cantonese.
The head chef has been here for 50 years, is already in his 80s and still has no intention to hang up his wok!
This place left me impressed and satisfied, love all the food we ordered that are cooked in authentic old Cantonese styled. Old is indeed gold.
Here are what we ordered:
Fried Rice - Very well-done fried rice that all of us love it. One of the best I ever had.
Sweet & Sour Pork - This dish never goes wrong in everywhere - if a restaurant cannot cook this dish well that mean not even need to think well on other dishes. This international dish is the favorite of Sonny and the taste is up to our expectations.
Pipa Duck - to our surprise, it is super well done, the meat does not taste tough and hard at all.
Love the crispy skin and soft juicy meat. Deserve 10 thumbs up.
YuanYang Hor Fun & Bee Hoon - Though this is our first time having it as Singapore's Tzi Char do not have this on the menu. It tastes normal to us, up to expectation.
Stir Fried You Mai - AKA Chinese Lettuce which has a unique, rich, pleasant fragrance. It is considered a super food that is very beneficial to health.
Mock Shark Fin and Egg - We never had this dish before; this dish is only available here. It is actually tang hoon that fried with crab meat, egg and carrot. The taste is very special, I can taste the presence of Chinese wine with their special recipe.
The correct way to eat this dish is similar like we ate BBQ meat at Korean restaurant - scoop the mock shark fin and place it on a piece of lettuce, wrap it and stuff in your mouth.
Jin Yuan Hong Kong Restaurant
Google Map: https://maps.app.goo.gl/1kp23GFMd4HabqfF7
This Hongkong Dim Sum restaurant is very popular here. If you come during weekends, you are expected to wait for tables during weekends.
We come on a Monday and there is not much crowd at all, the food we ordered are all very yummy.
The porridge is very smooth and well flavored.
This chee cheong fun is very special, the smooth rice skin with you tiao as fillings!
Char Siew Bun is good and we ordered additional 10 pieces for takeaway.
Love the braised chicken feet so much that we ordered second serving. Hubby is into this dish very much, to him, the reputation of the restaurant depends on this dish.
In general, the food here are freshly made.
To reach here from Kuala Lumpur, it takes about 1hr drive!
I always love paddy view, vast and green, so pretty but I really hate the sun.
These Padi will turn into gold colour nearing to the harvesting time which will be approximately in March.
If you want to come here for overnight, there are several homestay options available with the views on the paddy.
Aries Coffee House
Google Map:https://maps.app.goo.gl/9a53kYSjiJeQFJL9A
The sun was scorching and we are desperate for shelter, aircon, cold drinks and chill.
We found this small cafe in the small-town centre of Sekinchan.
The cafe is run by a family that is also staying here in one of the room.
Well decorated with Japanese's theme of Sakura hanging from the ceiling, a cosy piano at a corner.
Hai Shang Ren Seafood Restaurant
Google Map: https://maps.app.goo.gl/XqHAq2vaeZiPfeKV8
Who doesn't love sunset, sea waves and seafood?
Located in Tanjong Karang which is 30 minutes' drive from Sekinchan, there are many seafood restaurants here as most of the restaurant's owners are actually fishermen where there are direct sources of seafood.
We came here around 645pm, where the place was shone by the glaring sun which is getting ready to report for duties at the side of the world.
We got a table by the sea; blinds will draw up after the sun went down.
The food we had here are very nice especially the seafood, as for the har cheong gai and la zi ji they tasted so so only.
Too bad, the thick cloud covered up the setting egg yolk, but the place still looks so pretty.
Here what it feels like after the moon came out.
Lucky Cats
Originate from Japan and known as Maneki Neko is a popular figurine that is known to bring luck to the owners.
According to the Japanese's folklore, there was a feudal lord who was caught in a thunderstorm, and he saw a cat at the entrance of a temple who was waving at him to come inside. As the lord took his first few steps away and lighting struck on the original spot where he was standing. The lord believe the cat brought him good fortune and avoided a mishap and from that day onwards, cats are well loved by Japanese for bring good fortune.
The figurine depicts a cat, traditionally a calico Japanese Bobtail, with a paw raised in a beckoning gesture. The figurines are often displayed in most retail shops and households to bring good luck generally placed near or facing the main entrance.
Maneki-neko come in different colors and styles and vary in degrees of detail. Common colors are white, black, red, and gold. Originally, maneki-neko were white, but over the years with the combination of Feng Shui, different color variations were born. The original white color is to get good luck and overall good fortune, while black is to ward off evil, red is for good health, yellow or gold is for wealth, and pink is for romance
I have a black one at hone which means "ward off negative energy".
And while shopping in One Utama, I chanced upon a shop selling these Nekos, and bought 2 home - love at first sight.
Now in my house, my 3 pet kitties are seated here facing the main door.
Chummy and me have known each other for decades, though we live in different countries, but we have the little corner in each other's heart. Thank you for ageing gracefully with me. I hope you are blessed in whatever you do.
When he was a kid, until now he is a full-time adult, Godmother witnessed it.
When he was young, he will be waiting for us to bring him out during weekends, now he became an adult, we now are the ones looking forward if he has time to join us for a meal.
Glad that he is growing well, was not a rebellious kid. He has a pure heart that attracts little animals even stray cats. We wish him all the best and success in whatever he does.
Lastly, before the end of this blog, I would like to pay a tribute to respected Uncle Koh who went home with lord few years ago. This trip of 3 of us added a point to pay our respect to him. May he rest in peace.
